We had our biggest turnout ever on Sunday 5th March with about 160 people at Merri’s Magical Gum Morning at Merri Park in Northcote.
Merri Creek Management Committee coordinated this event for a third time, this year with a focus on pre-school kids and their families. It was supported by funding from a range of organisations including Isabel Henderson Kindergarten, Friends of Merri Park, the City of Darebin and Eucalypt Australia. The day was tailored for a happy crowd of curious young children and their families beside the Merri Creek.
The terrific weather and the dappled light under the gum trees made a great setting for Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Bill Nicholson’s Welcome to Country and for Wurundjeri dance group Djirri Djirri. People also loved creating creatures with Trash Puppets, making paper Kingfishers, having gum leaves painted on their arms, twining toys with wool and poa grasses, watching waterbugs, delighting in live butterflies and being together on a lovely Sunday morning.
