AUGUST 2022 Newsletter of the Merri Creek Management Committee (MCMC)marran baba Merri Creek Regional Parklands Consultation
MCMC supports this parklands initiaitive and was pleased to attend the launch of the community consultation by the Minister for Environment and Climate Action, the Hon. Lily D’Ambrosio, in mid-July. With the magnificent backdrop of Galada Tamboore providing an apt illustration, the Minister spoke of the qualities of the park and the opportunities it will provide for linking trails, open spaces and conservation areas. Tour the Merri Catchment - Virtually
The tour shows the Merri Catchment in the context of Australia and Victoria, the Wurundjeri Woi Worung lands and the basalt plains. It explains what a catchment is and shows the Merri's relationship to the Great Dividing Range and neighbouring catchments, then looks at each of the Merri's subcatchments. It illustrates the underlying basalt geography of most of the catchment, visits its volcanoes and explains how basalt has been used. It's a great introduction to the catchment, and the aerial photography makes it easy to understand. Art Exhibition & Cards inspired by Merri Creek
Like many people during the lockdowns, Lana gravitated toward Merri Creek and was inspired by what she found. The 5km restriction made her aware of the lack of public green space available in the densely built northern suburbs. Moreland City Council now Merri-bek City CouncilWe welcome Moreland City Council's decision to change its name to the Woiwurrung phrase Merri-bek, which means 'rocky country'. Moreland collaborated with the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation on the renaming. We are particularly pleased that the new name has strong links to Merri Creek, or Merri Merri as the name wwas originally recorded, which means 'very rocky'. We expect to see the new name on digital materials and major signage later this year after it receives formal approval from the Govenor in Council. We will update our own materials at that point to reflect the new name of our member Council. 500 Silver Banksia Seedlings for the Merri

The slideshows from two online events - Talking Merri Birrarung: Caring for Country where the Merri flows into Birrarung (Yarra River) in December 2021 and January 2022 - reflect the project’s goal to enrich community connections to Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country. They are valuable resources on local intercultural responses to Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung cultural practices. |
