Our 2022 achievements

Check out Merri Creek Management Committee's recent achievements by reading our latest Annual Report (2021-22). The easing of COVID-19 restrictions allowed a bumper year of face-to-face community events.

• 1000 volunteers provided hands-on help;
• 6775 people participated in environmental education activities;
• 333 community events and school-based sessions were delivered;
• we partnered with 102 organisations;
• we worked with 34 clients and funding bodies;
• our financial bottom line was once again very positive!

Creating frog habitat workshop (2023)

Saturday 3 June, 2-4pm

Reservoir Scout Hall, Leamington Street, Reservoir - see Google map
Local ecologist, David De Angelis, will lead us on a virtual walking tour of “good” froggy habitat and show how you can incorporate them at home, in your local wildlife corridor or as part of a conservation group. This will include key habitat elements for frogs, biological information on local frog species, and how to identify them. This is a family friendly event (suitable for ages 8 and up). Light refreshments will be provided.

Friends of Edwardes Lake will be selling frog habitat plants, with funds to go towards their conservation work. Funded by Melbourne Water and the City of Darebin. Supported by Friends of Edwardes Lake & MCMC.

Wetland Planting at Imaroo St Fawkner

Learning in school indigenous gardens

Merri Creek catchment’s schools are excellent places for indigenous gardens and offer an array of learning opportunities. MCMC’s Learning Grounds Program is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach. We’ve worked with school communities for over 20 years with over fifty school-based indigenous garden projects in the Merri Creek catchment who need one-on-one specialist support. Indigenous gardens in schools are all individual yet share common potential curriculum links such as history, geography, performance, art, and science. We tailor and maximise age-appropriate student learning including briefings about the difference between introduced, native and indigenous species and cultural contexts such as NAIDOC Week.

Inspiring indigenous gardens on school grounds include:
• Carlton Primary School connects with their curriculum goals to notice Wurundjeri seasons through changes in their indigenous garden.
• Marymede Catholic College co-created their indigenous garden as an outdoor learning centre to promote and contextualise learning on Wurundjeri Country.
• Thornbury Primary School connected with NAIDOC Week and replaced introduced species with indigenous plants.
• Edgars Creek Primary School made their connection to Country come to life in 2022 with a series of student incursions culminating in planting a new indigenous garden.
• Spensley Street Primary School acknowledge Wurundjeri Country with their indigenous gardens and show respect for the very nearby biodiversity conservation efforts at Hall Reserve.
Local research shows multiple advantages of indigenous gardens at school and benefits such as cooling school grounds and enhancing student cognitive development.

Help remove litter from Merri Creek

Visitors to Merri Creek are often alarmed by the amount of litter trapped among vegetation and on the creek banks. The great majority of this litter comes after rain runs it from local streets into the creek, via underground stormwater drains, and it's obviously a lot worse when it rains heavily.

There's been a lot of community interest in helping to remove this litter. This is great, but we want to ensure that litter clean-ups are done safely. Wet weather brings hazards such as slippery/muddy banks, site flooding and strong water flows. We always complete a site safety assessment before going ahead with community litter clean-ups. Follow the 'Read more' prompt to find out how we support people to safely undertake litter clean-ups.
