Merri Creeek Management Committee

We acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung People of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Owners of the land of the Merri Merri.

Group flag croppedMerri Creek Management Committee (MCMC) held a hugely popular Walk and Talk on the Darebin Parklands Spiritual Trail in Alphington on Sunday 5 May. The event was led by Uncle Trevor Gallagher, a Gunditjmara Elder. There were over 60 bookings when the booking system was shut down two weeks before the event!

Uncle Trevor used storytelling, dance and audience participation to present information on Aboriginal history, culture and contribution, focusing on Darebin Creek.  Also, MCMC's Waterwatch Coordinator, Julia Cirillo, pointed out current waterway issues, tested the water quality, and explained how people can improve the ecological health of our creeks.

It was wonderful to see the respect, caring and engagement of all participants. Given the popularity of the event, we hope to run it again in future years.

We were able to run this event because of an MCMC Waterwatch funding and delivery agreement with Darebin City Council.

Save the Date - Members Bus Tour to Upper Merri Catchment

Wurundjeri panel - featureSee a web version of these fabulous panels which celebrate the outstanding community achievement since 1975 in transforming Merri Creek from a weed-smothered drain to a much-loved waterway running through a bushland corridor: fronts of panels (17MB file); backs of panels (9MB file).

The two metre size panels were originally displayed at libraries and other public places throughout the Merri Creek catchment over 16 months until late 2016, in celebration of MCMC's 25th Anniversary.
