CHAPTER 3
SITE LISTINGS
A Google Earth virtual tour of the Merri Creek Catchment's geological and geomorphological sites is available here. You need Google Earth version 4 or above for the tours to work.
A clickable map is also provided at the bottom of this page to simplify navigating to sites.

SITES OF GEOLOGICAL AND GEOMORPHOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE IN PART OF THE CATCHMENT OF THE MERRI CREEK
SITE IDENTIFICATION: Each site is given a number and a name (Figure 5, fold-out map in rear pocket) (See also Figure 1). The numbering system begins at the junction of the Merri Creek and Yarra River (Site 1) and the numbers increase upstream (northward). The name is derived from a nearby street or other cultural or topographical features named on the 1:5 000 MMBW maps used as the basis for site location. The site name includes the Municipality and states the principal feature of significance at the site e.g. SITE 7: RUSHALL STATION, FITZROY - BASALT STRUCTURES. For each site a statement is prepared which details the following:
LOCATION: Number of the 1:5 000 MMBW map sheet, adjacent streets or roads and 8 figure AMG grid reference. (The spelling of geographical names has been standardised with that shown on the 1:5 000 maps). The site is located on an extract from the 1:5 000 maps. Note: in describing location, left bank and right bank are used in the context of the observer looking downstream.
ACCESS: Name of the closest road, vehicular track or walking route.
OWNERSHIP & MUNICIPALITY: If Public Land, the name of the managing, authority is given. Owners of private land are not identified. The local government authority is given.
SITE DESCRIPTION: Name and brief description of significant features e.g. rock types, structures, fossils, landforms or geomorphic processes.
SIGNIFICANCE RATING: All sites have been assigned a significance rating on a scale graded from International, National, State, Regional, Local, or Unknown significance. The latter category is used where there is insufficient information about the site to allow a significance assessment to be made.
SENSITIVITY, THREATS, POTENTIAL UTILISATION OF THE SITE.
A sensitivity rating is given (refer to page 5 for the basis of this rating). A short discussion of activities that may damage the site and suggested management procedures to maintain or enhance the significant features.
ILLUSTRATIONS: Figures: extract of 1:5000 MMBW map to show location and boundaries of the site. Photographs: one or more colour photographs to show the significant features of the site. Some, sites have interpretive labelled diagrams or sketch maps and cross sections.
