As the busyness of nearby shops increase to a Christmas-time fever, we at Merri Creek Management Committee encourage you to find reprieve in a walk on the Merri in Gunyang season. Gunyang is a time during which Wurundjeri people bring attention to the grass seed ripening, the characteristic flutter of male Golden Sun Moths, and skinks and lizards basking in the sun. (Perhaps you could also hear the call of the Growling Grass Frog in the evenings?)

If your festive season includes gift-giving and you’d prefer to skip the chaos, it’s not too late to find a meaningful present that bring joys as well as impact on the creek you love. Stunning bird photographer and Friends of Merri Creek member, Adi Tudor, provides monthly inspiration in her 2026 Birds of Merri Creek calendar, a beautiful Christmas gift. Adi generously donates 50% of profits to Merri Creek Management Committee, supporting the protection and restoration of the creek and its tributaries.

This year’s calendar features the Nankeen Kestrel, Common Bronzewing, Great Egret and European Goldfinch - alongside recent photographs of much-loved local favourites. Pickup in time for Christmas is available from a Thornbury address for any of the items (address supplied once purchased, 24 hours notice required).

Check out also, a range of Christmas cards, tea-towels and a Merri Creek birding book by Johnathon Tickner – beautiful gifts that give back to the Merri.
