Environmental Education
MCMC is looking forward to finding out more about the current state of fauna in the grasslands around Melbourne in 2022, as our skilled Ecological Restoration staff carry out contract work for the following species and clients:
- Surveys of Growling Grass Frog, Striped Legless Lizard and Golden Sun Moth at Beveridge Recreation Reserve, for Mitchell Shire Council.
- Monitoring of Golden Sun Moth at a grassland offset site in Craigieburn for Hume City Council.
- Monitoring of reptiles at new conservation reserves in the Merri Creek catchment and in the west of Melbourne, for the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

While walking or cycling along Merri Creek you may be aware of the indigenous plantings, constructed wetlands and the animal life of the creek corridor. But there is an underlying element to this - the Merri valley contains many millions of years of history and secrets.

Pesticide Detectives - Round 3 results
Sediment samples have been collected from Five Mile Creek in Essendon and sent off for testing as part of the fantastic Pesticide Detectives program. The positive news is that, as with the results from Merri Creek late last year, there were no pesticides found in the sample.
Pesticides Detectives
The ecological effects of pesticides in waterways was explored as part of an exciting citizen science project called Pesticide Detectives in 2019. This federally funded program is a collaboration between RMIT University and citizen science volunteers.

Rotunda Wetland in Clifton Hill - the creation of small wetland in inner Melbourne
Moomba Park in Fawkner - the creation of a diverse woodland habitat
Rushwood Drive Reserve in Craigieburn - the restoration of a critical patch of remnant grassland and riparian habitat
Merri Park Wetland in Northcote - the creation of a small diverse wetland in an urban retarding basin
Galada Tamboore in Campbellfield / Thomastown - a special place for the traditional owners of this area, the Wurundjeri people

Sodic & Dispersive Soils
Sodic and Dispersive Soils in the Merri Creek Catchment
A presentation made by eminent soil scientist Dr Robert van de Graaff in October 2019 to an MCMC workshop on Sodic & Dispersive Soils of the Upper Merri. Due to the geological and climate history of the Merri Creek catchment, most soils in the catchment are sodic and thus highly susceptible to erosion. These soils present major challenges for urban development and until now have been largely overlooked.
